If top gear can afford a small space program, I think we’re paying too much for the licence fee.

    Best. Reliant Robin death. EVER.

“not some yankee half mexican columbia rocket that explodes in the sky and takes 20 years to build”

Funny that you should say that, considering the rocket motors which were the sole power that lifted the Reliant shuttle were not only designed and built by “yankees”, they were made in Arizona, right next to Mexico.

They worked perfectly, too boot. Sadly, the same can’t be said about the British-made separation mechanism ;) Better luck next time, huh?

  18. JunkerJ0rg says:

    Awesome:: It would have been really really awesome if it had separated:;

  19. nickabergmann says:

    that was AWESOME!!!! …… BOOM!

  20. Rotard12a says:

Nah, it’s real except for the boom, though their descriptions of the components are dubious.

That is a real Reliant Robin. The solid fuel rockets on the side are just empty sheetmetal tubes, and most of the main “tank” is empty space. The “shuttle” was propelled by 6 72″ Contrail hybrid rockets (not liquid fuel), making about 2.9 thousand lbs. of thrust each.

The explosion at the end is from a previously recorded bomb test at the same location. Just a little TV magic ;)

  21. rof670 says:

Damn, i didn’t think they were actually gonna do it. LOL.

  22. usmcboyer says:

  23. hi5lo2 says:

And that’s why I hate the CBC.

  24. hi5lo2 says:

My god, these Top Gear guys have the best jobs in the world!

  25. DestAIDS says:

Topgear is watched by an estimated 350 million people worldwide. Selling off the rights means they’ve got a LOT of money to invest in the series. Aside from that the advertising during Top Gear will be a lot more expensive than other times and will rake in quite a penny as well.
